The Mayr Method Explained: Concepts, Weight Loss and Steps

August 29, 2021 by admin Leave a Comment

Often times we are intrigued by how different famous people lose weight or how they did their weight loss journey successfully. In the past year, we have been seeing the amazing transformation of Rebel Wilson (Australian Comedienne).

Rebel has been inspired by The Mayr Method and had declared 2020 as the ‘year of health’. And true to what she said, she had transformed and the world had witnessed her inspiring lifestyle change. According to the actress, her stay in the VIVAMAYR Medical Health Resort had changed her life.

So, after seeing weight loss transformations of celebrities, we do ask if this can be suitable for us and we want to know if we can be as successful as these celebrities in our battle of losing weight.

What is The Mayr Method?

The Mayr Method is a modern day diet adaptation based in the ‘Mayr Cure’. This is through the works of the well-renowned Austrian Gastroenterologist Dr Franz Xaver Mayer who started this study about a century ago promoting gut health.

Dr Mayer believed that people are poisoning themselves through the food that they are eating. He promoted natural intestinal cleansing for better health and regeneration, along side with weight loss.

This diet plan is all about consuming high alkaline, low acidity food and to always practice mindful eating. It is designed to be carried out for two weeks but people are encouraged to practice this long term and be incorporated in their daily living.

Concept behind the Mayr Method

The theory behind the high alkaline, low acidity food is that the diet can alter the pH level of the body through metabolic wastes.

This is claiming that acidic waste is harmful to the body whilst the alkaline wastes are beneficial. Following a highly alkaline diet will bring about improved health and overall well-being.

Four Pillars of Treatment:

  1. Exercise
  2. Nutrition
  3. Medicine
  4. Awareness

Foods Allowed in The Mayr Method

Since this diet plan believes that health begins with a healthy gut, they believe that this is achieved by consuming high alkaline and low acidity food.

  • Vegetables – Broccoli, Cauliflower, Bean Sprouts, Spinach, Kale, Cabbage
  • Fruits – Oranges, Peaches, Apples, Bananas, Mangoes, Berries, Melons
  • Nuts – Walnuts, Macadamias, Pistachios, Pili, Pecan
  • Seeds – Flaxseeds, Chia, Sesame Seeds,
  • Grains – Oats, Polenta, Millet, Buckwheat
  • Meat and Seafood – Salmon, Turkey, Lamb, Beef
  • Beverage – Water, Pomegranate Juice, Green tea

Foods to avoid

This type of diet can be restrictive in some group of food. They do not allow consumption of the following:

  • Sugar – Refined sugar, Fruit juices, Beverages containing sugar, Sweets and Candies
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Dairy Products – Cow’s milk, yogurt, Cheese (some cheese products are allowed), Ice cream, Butter
  • Gluten rich food – include Bread, Pasta and Baked products
  • Processed food – Packaged food, Cereals, Cookies and Biscuits, Fast Food, Foods containing lots of salt, Canned goods, etc.

Steps in the Mayr Method

There are several steps to follow when you are in the Mayr Method. This is important in achieving the desired goal you have set

Eat Slowly

Ensuring that you digest your food well before swallowing. This entails chewing your food 40-60 times. This will give digestion less work to do because food has been broken down to little pieces.

Sugar and Caffeine Detox for 14 days

This can cause major changes in the body since it will lower the glucose level of the body and promote insulin resistance. Removing sugar, alcohol and caffeine from the body will put the body in withdrawal and could suffer from mood swings.

Mindful Eating

Focusing on meals so that there’s no distractions. It will allow you to focus on flavours and how you are consuming your food. You are discouraged to talk to other people, use your phone or do other things while eating!

No Snaking Between Meals

While other diet promote small frequent meals, this type of diet restricts snacking between meals. It encourages eating healthy whole food during meals but definitely not in between meals.

No Raw Food after 4 PM

No consumption of raw food after 4pm will give your digestion a break. Raw food are more difficult to digest and will require more time to be fully digested.

Benefits of The Mayr

There are many advantages of doing this method and, also, this can give you the result that you have been wanting

  • It allows you to eat highly nutritious food
  • Encourages and promotes mindful eating which can allow you to have healthier food choices
  • Will teach you good portion control habits that you can carry out as a lifestyle change

Disadvantages of The Mayr

We also look at the cons when looking at a type of diet. People will have different needs and some diets will not be suitable for other people. It is very important to consult your GP first before embarking on a full diet change to ensure that it is safe.

The Mayr has some disadvantages or downside like:

  • It uses some supplements that has a laxative effect. Whilst they can be used, it does not cause fat loss.
  • This type of diet can be restrictive
  • Some of the foods allowed in this diet are high caloric and contains high carbohydrates that can easily induce weight gain.

Is The Mayr Effective for Weight Loss?

There is no study completely stating the effectiveness of The Mayr Method. However, the basic principles followed by this diet is completely effective in promoting gut health.

The elimination of sugar and processed food and consumption of whole foods are healthy habits that, if followed consistently, can definitely yield to good weight loss results.

Another good approach that we can all practice is mindful eating habits that will promote good food choices and focusing on what is on our plate rather than doing something else whilst eating. This will give us good eating experience and will help our digestion.
